“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger” (Psalm 8:1-2).
God doesn’t often act how we’d expect—or the way we think he should.
Thank God, he doesn’t.
Though his name is majestic in all the earth and he has set his glory in the heavens themselves, God chooses to establish a stronghold against his enemies through the praise of children and infants.
How does God use the praise of children and infants to establish a stronghold against his enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger?
He uses such beautiful praise to remind us of who he is and how he feels about us.
God is the maker of heaven and earth. He created all things, including you and me. He is the covenant keeper, the miracle worker, the Savior, our Rescuer and Deliverer—the almighty God. What’s more, he loves us. That’s what he tells us in his Word, and our God means exactly what he says.
Sometimes I forget that. I forget what children know and take as a matter of fact with their child-like faith: God loves me. He forgives me. He calls me his dearly loved child. Heaven is my home.
I’m willing to bet that you forget those truths at times as well, dear Christian.
The older we get, the more time we spend in this sin-darkened world, the easier it is for us to forget. To doubt. To worry. To wonder. To be afraid that what God says in his Word isn’t actually true.
All of our fears, doubts, worries, and concerns often threaten to overwhelm us. The devil whispers lies and accusations, filling us with guilt and shame over our past misdeeds and sins against God. Surely God can’t love you after that… Surely God can’t forgive you after what you just did.
And then… and then we go to church and hear the little kids in the back rows belting out “Jesus Loves Me” with the rest of the congregation. We hear the children standing in front, singing out their hearts in praise and thanks to the God who loves them—and us—so much. Their praise is in beautiful harmony with the truths that God gives us in his Word, that he sent his Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life, die on the cross to take away our sins, and rise again from the dead so we know that we have life in him.
God loves me. He forgives me. He calls me his dearly loved child. Heaven is my home.
For me, I hear my one-and-a-half-year-old daughter sitting next to me in church, singing with words that only she and God fully understand. I see her face light up when she points at the pictures of Jesus and the cross we have hanging on the wall in our home. I see her excitement when she flips through the pages of her Bible during our family devotions. I hear her joyful “Amen!” when we finish saying our prayers at the end of the night.
And as she sings… as she points at the pictures of Jesus and smiles… as she flips through the pages of her Bible during our family devotions… as she shouts “Amen!” … I watch as Satan is sent staggering. My daughter and her faith and her praise to our heavenly Father are an encouragement for me; a beautiful reminder of who our God is.
Through the praise of children and infants, God establishes a stronghold to silence our enemies.
Watch. Listen. Remember.
Dear Christian, God loves you. He forgives you. He calls you his dearly loved child. Heaven is your home.
